Long Term Care Settings or Facility Options

Long term care setting or facility options explained.Long-term care can be provided in a variety of settings. Your specific long-term care needs will generally determine where you receive care. Some needs can easily be taken care of at home, while others would be better provided for in a nursing home.

You may not have a choice in where you receive your care, your health may choose for you. Care can be provided in the following settings:

Skilled Nursing Facility - These are licensed facilities that primarily engage in providing continual (24 hour per day) skilled nursing care to all of their residents. The focus is on skilled care and not custodial care.

Assisted Care Facility - An apartment type setting that provides personal care and health services for people who need help with their activities of daily living. Meals and transportation are provided. Many offer a variety of daily activities for their residents.

Alzheimer's Care Unit - May be associated with a skilled nursing facility or an assisted care facility. It provides the same sort of services in a secure environment that protects residents from wandering away. The staff is specially trained to handle people with Alzheimer's.

Home Care - This is generally considered appropriate when non-skilled care is needed. Home care could consist of a daily visit by a home health aide who provides assistance with bathing and dressing and a weekly visit by a homemaker who performs housekeeping chores like cooking and cleaning.

Adult Day Center - Care provided in a community-based center for adults who need assistance or supervision during the day. They can provide mental and social stimulation for someone needing care or respite for a caregiver.

You Can Have Options!

When you have a long term care insurance policy you will have options for your long term care needs. Although your personal health may dictate where your care will be received, with insurance, more seniors are able to stay home longer than those without long term care insurance coverage.
